Why is the second-hand market for new energy vehicles deserted?
Jan 17, 2019

With the launch of China's ban on the sale of fuel vehicles and the domestic adoption of vehicles to add ethanol gasoline in 2020, fuel vehicles have withdrawn from the automotive market a little, and new energy vehicles are becoming the mainstay of the automotive market. But with the arrival of the car replacement period, why is the secondary market for new energy vehicles still deserted ?

New energy vehicle second-hand market status

In 2016, China's new energy vehicle production and sales completed 517,000 and 507,000, respectively, an increase of 51.7% and 53% over the same period in 2015. In 2017, China's new energy vehicles achieved rapid growth again, with production and sales of 790,000 and 780,000 respectively. On the basis of 2016, they increased by 53.8% and 53.3%.

Since the start of the sale of new energy vehicles in 2011, the first batch of electric vehicles entered the replacement period, but the replacement period is not the popularity of the second-hand market, but a deserted.

Huaqiang Wisdom Network Xiaobian learned that compared with the hot new car sales, in the Guangzhou market, it is rare to find a store to buy new energy used cars. It is almost impossible to see the traces of new energy used cars in the used car market. Many used car dealers have expressed reluctance to do new energy used cars, and a small number of them said they can accept, but the price of the acquisition is very low.

For the purchase price of used cars, under normal circumstances, the traditional fuel vehicle maintenance rate is calculated according to the annual depreciation of 5%. However, there is no general calculation formula for the new energy vehicle's hedge ratio. Taking a new car with a price of 100,000 yuan, a two-year purchase and a 150-kilometer battery life as an example, the purchase price given by the dealer is only about 28,000 yuan.

Why is the second-hand market for new energy vehicles deserted?

The imperfect recycling network is the main reason. Since the power battery involves heavy metals, electrolytes, and environmental issues, every step of the power battery recycling can not be neglected. Huaqiang Wisdom Network Xiaobian thinks too, recycling batteries, it is inevitable that a series of safety accidents such as battery instability, damage, leakage, etc., causing short circuit, fire, and even explosion, the company is not thankful for doing this. Many companies are reluctant to participate in the recycling and recycling market, and the situation of desertedness is inevitable.

Moreover, the depreciation rate of new energy vehicles is too low, the price assessment is not perfect, and the market activity is combated. While most used car dealers refuse to accept new energy vehicles, some dealers are trying to acquire them, but the purchase price is extremely low. A new energy vehicle that uses one year can't even sell 60% of the new car price. A new car is sold. The new energy vehicle with a price of nearly 300,000 yuan and a battery life of more than 300 kilometers has a purchase price of only 130,000 yuan for more than one year. The depreciation rate of one year has reached or even exceeded 60%. It is common for new energy used cars to be shot and the depreciation rate to be high.

The commercialization of recycled lithium battery intermediates is too difficult. Recycled batteries are different in form, size, specifications, and package form, and the disassembly and packaging are difficult to achieve batch production. Even if it is dismantled, the processing materials such as the positive electrode material, the negative electrode material, the electrolyte solution, and the separator in the lithium battery are complicated, and it is difficult to produce a high value-added intermediate product, and the recycling enterprise cannot make money and is difficult to commercialize.

Policies help recycle, but the process is slow. The country does not take into account the status quo of recycling of new energy vehicles. The Ministry of Industry and Information Technology proposed the first domestic recycling and utilization of power batteries, and clearly pointed out that the recycling and dismantling enterprises should have the relevant national standards for the recycling of vehicle power batteries. It will be officially implemented from December 1, 2017. In addition, since February 1, 2018, the new national standard for three power batteries, such as the “Recovery of Residual Energy for Vehicle Power Battery”, will also be officially implemented. As early as July 2012, the "Energy Conservation and New Energy Vehicle Industry Development Plan (2012-2020)" also clearly stated that it is necessary to formulate power battery recycling management methods and establish a cascade utilization and recycling management system, Beijing, a subsidiary of the State Grid. The Zhejiang subsidiary immediately invested funds to conduct research on the use of the ladder. Helpless, but progress is slow.

Thoughts on the second-hand market of new energy vehicles

By 2020, the cumulative scrap of lithium batteries for vehicles in China will reach 200,000 tons, and the market recycling scale will reach 10.1 billion yuan. With the development of new energy vehicles and the passage of time, the pressure on the recovery of power lithium batteries will increase.

According to the understanding of Huaqiang Wisdom Network Xiaobian, since the replacement of fuel vehicles by new energy vehicles is the general trend, it is essential to solve the dilemma of the second-hand market, otherwise it will eventually affect the sustainable development of new energy vehicles.
